Microwave and wireless systems have emerged from stand-alone applications e.g. for communications and radar, to highly integrated systems integrated in almost any kind of device or product. Compared to DC electronics wireless systems cannot be capsulated as the associated antennas require an interaction with the surrounding. The interaction with other antennas does not occur separately it also includes objects in its integration environment. In order to minimize the unintended influences, it is state-of-the-art to demand for a dedicated integration space and a clearly defined antenna to free-space interface.
For future applications, e.g. in consumer electronics, automotive or biomedical devices, such kind of restrictions cannot be made anymore. This is the reason why new integration strategies are required.
